Families (Households)

The Families (Households) feature lets Financial Advisors manage related contacts as a single household. Instead of jumping between individual contact records, you can view household members, activity, communications, documents, accounts, and household-level totals in one unified view.

Note: Households are available when your industry is set to Financial Advisor.

Access Households

  1. Go to Contacts.
  2. Click Households in the header navigation.
  3. You will see every household in your account.

Households List View

The Households list helps you quickly scan families at a glance. Each row includes:

  • Household name — click the name to open the household
  • Head of Household and spouse details
  • HOH Peek and Spouse Peek icons for quick previews
  • Created date

Search and Sort

  • Search: Use the search bar to find a household by name.
  • Sort: Use the sort arrow on the Household column to sort A–Z or Z–A.

Household Detail Page

Click a household name to open the household detail page. This page brings together key information across all household members.

Household Overview

  • Household name
  • Head of Household client status and client-since date
  • Total issued AUM across all household members
  • Total issued insurance across all household members
  • Last meeting date for any household member, excluding cancelled and no-show appointments
  • Writing advisor and servicing advisor, based on the Head of Household

Household Tabs

The household page includes tabs that show household-level information across the family:

  • Contacts — household members and their roles
  • Family Tree — visual relationship view and household structure management
  • Appointments — meetings across household members
  • Tasks — tasks related to household members
  • Notes — notes related to household members
  • Documents — documents across household members
  • Accounts — financial accounts across the household
  • Emails — email history across household members
  • Calls — call activity across household members
  • Texts — text message activity across household members

Create a Household

There are two common ways a household is created:

  • From a contact’s Family tab: Open the contact, go to Family, and add a spouse or family member. LeadCenter creates the household automatically.
  • By defining relationships: Add or update family relationships between contacts. See Defining Family Relationships.

Convert an Individual Contact into a Household

If a contact is not already part of a household, you can create one by adding a family member from that contact’s record.

  1. Open the contact you want to make the Head of Household.
  2. Click the Family tab.
  3. Click + Add Family Member.
  4. Search for an existing contact or create a new one.
  5. Select the relationship, such as Spouse, Child, or another family role.
  6. Click Save.

LeadCenter creates the household with the original contact as the Head of Household.

Manage Households

Edit the Household Name

  • From the Households list, click the three dots menu and select Edit family name.
  • From the household detail page, click Actions and select Edit.

Update Household Structure

Use the Family Tree tab to manage the household structure. You can:

  • Update relationships between household members
  • Promote a member to Head of Household
  • Add members to the household
  • Remove members from the household

Tip: The Family Tree tab is the easiest place to review and adjust family relationships at a glance.

Delete a Household

Deleting a household removes the household relationships, but it does not delete the contact records.

  • Single delete: Use the three dots menu on the Households list, or use Actions on the household detail page.
  • Bulk delete: Select multiple households on the Households list, then use the bulk action bar.

Important: Deleting a household removes family member relationships. The individual contact records remain in LeadCenter, but they are no longer grouped under that household.

Export Household Data

  1. Go to the Households list.
  2. Apply search filters if needed.
  3. Click ActionsDownload CSV.
  4. You will receive an email with the download link when the CSV is ready.

The export includes household information, Head of Household details, spouse details, and key contact data, including IDs.

Navigate from a Contact to Their Household

If a contact belongs to a household, you can open the household directly from the contact record.

  1. Open the contact’s detail page.
  2. In the Important Information section, find the Family field.
  3. Click the household name to open the household detail page.

Best Practices

  • Use a consistent household naming format, such as “Smith Household.”
  • Keep the Head of Household accurate because it affects servicing advisor, client status, and household-level context.
  • Open the household before a family meeting to review activity, notes, documents, and accounts across all members.
  • Use the Accounts tab to understand total AUM and insurance at the household level.
  • Review the Family Tree tab during onboarding so spouses, children, dependents, and other family members are captured correctly.

Troubleshooting

My spouse does not appear in the household view

Open the contact’s Family tab. If the spouse is listed but does not appear as expected in the household, use the Family Tree tab to confirm the relationship is set as Spouse and not another relationship type.

The household’s total AUM looks wrong

Household AUM is based on issued accounts across household members. Check each member’s Accounts tab to confirm accounts are present and have the correct status.

The Head of Household is wrong after a merge

When contacts from different households are merged, Head of Household may be reassigned automatically. Open the surviving household and use the Family Tree tab to promote the correct member to Head of Household. For more details, see Merge Contacts.

A child or dependent is missing from the household

Open the child or dependent’s contact record, go to the Family tab, and confirm they are linked to the correct household or Head of Household.
