New: Marketing Opt-Outs Are Now Preserved When Merging Contacts

When you merge contacts in LeadCenter, marketing opt-out settings are now preserved automatically on the surviving contact. This helps ensure communication preferences continue to be respected after a merge, including cases where one of the merged contacts had already opted out of a specific channel.


What’s New

  • Preserve opt-out protections during merges — If either contact has a marketing opt-out enabled, the surviving contact keeps that opt-out enabled after the merge.
  • Keep the most restrictive settings — LeadCenter now carries forward the stricter communication restrictions instead of allowing a merge to remove them.
  • Retain locked unsubscribe states — If an opt-out field was locked because of an unsubscribe action, that locked state is also preserved on the surviving contact.

How It Works

When two or more contacts are merged, LeadCenter compares each marketing opt-out setting across the contacts being combined. If any merged contact has an opt-out turned on, the surviving contact keeps that opt-out turned on after the merge.

This applies to communication restrictions such as Don't call, Don't email, Don't mass email, Do not text, Do not mail, and other related marketing opt-out settings.

If one of the merged contacts has a locked opt-out field because the person unsubscribed through an email link or replied STOP to SMS, that locked state is also preserved on the surviving contact.

After a merge, you can verify the updated communication restrictions from the surviving contact’s Opt outs area in the masthead or in the Marketing opts in card on the Overview tab.
